It’s probably my Midwest upbringing talking, but I’m always shocked when someone wants to interview me for an article or finds my story interesting. I think I’m so focused on keeping all of life’s balls in the air: kids, running a business, mental and physical wellness, etc., that I rarely stop and look back at how far I’ve come and what I’ve accomplished.
Thank you to Shoutout Socal for giving me permission to pause and reflect on the journey from being a radio DJ, to fulfilling my dream of owning my own styling company and living in San Diego, California. I’ve always loved the concept of the Butterfly Effect, because it always made sense to me that if you don’t take any steps toward your goals than nothing will happen and you are accepting the status quo. However, if you make even the smallest move toward the life you want, or the dream you’re envisioning, you are shifting the energy and there will always be something good that will eventually come out of it. Even if you don’t know what that good is in the moment, I firmly believe that it will reveal itself in due time.
I moved from Ohio, where I was working as a radio news host, to Seattle with no job or even the prospect of one. I took the chance, because I knew deep down that putting myself out there would be beneficial even if I had no idea how at the time. My risk paid off when I landed my dream job at a radio station that told me they weren’t even hiring! I was able to get an informational interview, and didn’t have any pressure since they were very clear they weren’t hiring. I was honest, authentic, and told my story about how I ended up there. It turned out that the woman in charge had a similar story (and was coincidentally also from Ohio), and she hired me on the spot, because she liked my story and initiative.
I ended up in San Diego, and owning a hair and makeup styling company keeping the same mindset that you don’t know unless you try. If you don’t try, the answer is always no. If you do take the chance and believe in your skills and what you have to offer, you might surprise yourself.
